RPL – Recognition of Prior Learning

Turn Your Existing Skills and Experience into a Recognised Qualification

Have you gained skills and experience through previous employment, training, short courses, non-accredited courses, or practical experience but don’t yet hold a formal qualification?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may help you have your existing skills and knowledge assessed against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

At NABC, we understand that learning doesn’t only happen inside a classroom. Many people develop valuable skills through years of working in the beauty industry, previous training, workplace experience, practical learning, or other relevant experiences. RPL provides a pathway for your existing skills and knowledge to be assessed without necessarily repeating training for skills you can already demonstrate.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that looks at the skills, knowledge and experience you have already gained and compares them with the requirements of a relevant qualification.

Your previous experience may have come from:

  • Previous employment
  • Beauty industry experience
  • Salon experience
  • Previous formal education or training
  • Non-accredited training
  • Short courses
  • Workshops and seminars
  • Workplace training
  • Self-directed learning
  • Practical experience
  • Skills developed through other relevant activities

If you can provide suitable evidence that demonstrates your existing skills and knowledge, these may be considered as part of the RPL assessment process.

Who Can Apply for RPL?

RPL may be suitable for people who have already developed relevant skills and experience and believe they may meet some or all of the requirements of a qualification.

For example, RPL may be worth considering if you:

  • Have worked in the beauty industry for a number of years.
  • Have completed previous beauty-related training.
  • Have completed non-accredited beauty courses.
  • Have practical experience but do not hold a formal qualification.
  • Have gained skills through employment or workplace training.
  • Have completed training with another provider.
  • Have developed skills through a combination of work and practical experience.
  • Are looking to formalise your existing skills with a recognised qualification.

How Does the RPL Process Work?

The RPL process involves assessing the skills and knowledge you already have against the requirements of the relevant qualification.

1. Initial Enquiry

Contact NABC and provide information about your previous experience, training and qualifications.

2. RPL Consultation

An RPL assessor or appropriate team member will discuss your experience with you and help determine whether RPL may be suitable for your circumstances.

3. Evidence Collection

You may be asked to provide evidence that demonstrates your existing skills and knowledge.

Depending on the qualification and assessment requirements, evidence may include:

  • Previous certificates or statements of attainment
  • Training records
  • Employment history
  • References
  • Work samples
  • Photographs or videos of practical work
  • Workplace documentation
  • Portfolios
  • Previous assessments
  • Relevant industry experience
  • Other appropriate supporting evidence

4. Assessment

Your evidence and existing skills are assessed against the requirements of the relevant qualification or units of competency.

5. Gap Training

If there are areas where your existing skills or knowledge do not fully meet the requirements, you may be required to complete additional training or assessment.

6. Outcome

Once the assessment process has been completed, you will be advised of the outcome and the next steps towards achieving the relevant qualification or units.

Why Choose RPL?

Save Time

If you already have relevant skills and knowledge, you may not need to repeat training for competencies you can already demonstrate.

Recognise Your Experience

RPL provides a pathway to have relevant skills and experience formally assessed against a recognised qualification.

Formalise Your Skills

Turn years of practical experience and previous learning into a formal qualification where you meet the relevant requirements.

Flexible Assessment

The assessment process can consider different types of evidence and learning gained through different experiences.

Avoid Unnecessary Re-Training

RPL can help identify what you already know and what additional learning or assessment may still be required.

Have You Completed a Non-Accredited Course?

If you have previously completed a non-accredited beauty course anywhere in Australia, your previous training and experience may still be relevant to your next steps.

NABC can discuss your previous training with you and determine what options may be available based on your individual circumstances.

Already Completed a Non-Accredited Course?

Pay $300 and we will arrange a call to discuss your previous training and help you understand your next steps.

Please note: Completing a previous course does not automatically guarantee an RPL outcome or a qualification. Your skills, knowledge and evidence must meet the relevant assessment requirements.

Important Information

RPL is an assessment process, not an automatic qualification conversion. Having previous experience, completing a short course, or holding a non-accredited certificate does not automatically mean that you will receive a nationally recognised qualification.

Your previous learning and experience must be supported by appropriate evidence and assessed against the relevant qualification requirements.

Every student’s circumstances are different. Contact NABC to discuss your previous training, employment experience and available evidence before beginning the RPL process.
